More than 40 years ago Robert C. Peoples looked at a cornfield at the intersection of Routes 40 and 896 and visualized a shopping center. Peoples Plaza would become part of his plan to develop a community in the Glasgow area. “When I looked at those fields, I saw residences and businesses. All of my work was centered around that vision,” Mr. Peoples said in 1987.Delaware Trust Company (now Wachovia Bank) was the first tenant, in 1970. Soon thereafter, in 1974, the Farmer in the Dell was built and in 1978, construction on the building presently occupied by Tender Loving Kare began. ┬áIn the mid 1980’s many of the anchor stores were added, Rite Aid, Thriftway and Brosius Eliason to name a few. Regal Cinemas’ 10-plex, state of the art, theater opened in 1992, soon thereafter expanding to 13 and finally 17 screens in 1999. The 1200 and 1400 office buildings were added in 1992 and 1993 respectively serving the communities’ professional, medical and business needs. With the addition of Genuardi’s in 1997, Home Depot, Burger King and Friendly’s in 1999 and Red Robin in 2004, Peoples Plaza sits as it is today – with room for expansion.

Peoples Plaza serves the Bear-Glasgow and Newark communities while also drawing customers from the surrounding areas including southern New Castle County and Cecil County, Maryland.
